Oral Surgery in Tampa, FL

Oral surgery helps maintain the health of a smile. One of the most standard forms of oral surgery is the removal of impaired teeth. Other reasons for extractions include disease, trauma, impacted wisdom teeth, or making room for orthodontic procedures. At ZM Dental in Tampa, FL 33618, we perform comfortable and safe tooth extraction surgeries to resolve your oral concerns.

Simple Tooth Extractions

Dr. Zineb Mediouni generally recommends a tooth extraction after he has tried all other options. And it is done keeping the well-being of your oral health. A simple tooth extraction surgery is performed when the tooth is present above the gum line and has roots that can be easily pulled out. During the extraction, we will loosen the tooth with an elevator tool. Next, forceps are used to pull out the affected tooth by gently applying controlled pressure. Gauze is placed to control the bleeding. We will prescribe painkillers and antibiotics to ensure speedy healing.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth become impacted when there is a lack of room in the gums for their eruption. They either do not fully grow from the gum line or emerge at an incorrect angle. Some of the common symptoms of impacted wisdom tooth include:

  • Bleeding and inflamed gums
  • Swelling and pain around the jawbone
  • Foul breath
  • Headache or jaw ache
  • Unpleasant taste when eating

What Is Involved In a Wisdom Tooth Surgery?

The duration of your wisdom tooth surgery may depend on the difficulty of the situation and the number of teeth to be extracted. Before you undergo your surgery, Dr. Zineb Mediouni will give you detailed instructions. You should avoid alcohol for at least a day before receiving the anesthesia. We also recommend that someone escorts you to the office as anesthesia effects will take some time to wear off.

After administering anesthesia, Dr. Zineb Mediouni will widen the socket around your wisdom teeth. The tooth will gently be moved from side to side until it is loose enough to remove with the forceps. If the tooth has deep roots in the gums, then we may cut through your gums and even remove some of the surrounding bones to reach the tooth. Then the incision is sealed with stitches.

Post-Recovery of Tooth Extractions

You will generally experience mild discomfort and swelling for several days after the surgery. It can take a couple of days for your mouth to heal completely. The recovery process must include:

  • Eat soft foods
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Use a cold compress to ease swelling
  • Use moist heat to alleviate sore jaw
  • Do not brush until the following day
  • Take the prescribed antibiotics
  • Do not chew on the operated area
